They traveled in silence for what seemed an eternity to Finn. He moved uneasily in his saddle. By morning Elspeth would be his or her animosity toward him would deepen.
âWhy do you fight against me when you didnât fight against marrying Alexander?â
Elspethâs loud sigh made Finn even more unsure of what he planned. âWedding Alexander was my duty to my brother, my father, and my clan. I have nae such responsibility where you are concerned.â She flicked a glance over her shoulder. âBesides, truth be told, I tried to convince Archie to break the contract before the wedding debacle.â
Finn would let it go for now, but he was determined to persuade her to his cause.
He allowed Elspeth to take the lead. They rode deeper into the woods where the trees grew closer together and only a narrow trail existed. The overhanging foliage blocked what little sun escaped the thickening clouds. A chill slid across Finnâs skin. Or was it nerves affecting him?
They entered a small clearing and Elspeth waited for him to ride up beside her. She stared at the darkened sky.
âWe need to hurry or we will be caught in a storm.â
As if on command, the clouds opened, drenching them.
âToo late. Is there some place we can shelter? It is too far to return to the castle.â
Finn scanned the edge of the woods. Several paths led into the forest. He wondered which one led to the hunting lodge Duncan described as part of their conspired plan.
âFollow me,â Elspeth called to him over the cadence of heavy raindrops striking the leafy canopy.
They rode farther into the forest to where the trail widened and opened into a small glen. A faerie-tale cottage with thatched roof and shuttered windows welcomed, inviting them to enter. Finn couldnât have asked for a more perfect setting to proceed with his seduction.
He hid his smile. Duncan assured him a storm would force them to spend a night alone in a cottage in the woods. Amazing man, that Duncan.
After securing the horses in a byre near the cottage, Finn and Elspeth ran through the pelting rain to the door. He followed her into the single room. The open door didnât provide enough light to discern the features of the interior. Elspeth retrieved a flint and stone from a small wooden box hanging on the wall next to the door along with some candles, which she lit and placed into metal holders on the table.
Although the lighting remained dim, the details of the room came into focus: rough-hewn wood furniture, table and bench, and a reed mat covering an earthen floor.
Finnâs pulse jumped at the sight of the cozy bed.
Next to a fire pit in the center of the floor sat a small pile of straw for tinder, twigs and such for kindling, and chopped logs for fuel. Duncan had seen the cottage well provisioned. Elspeth handed Finn the flint and stone, and he started a small fire to handle the chill. Although he hoped later, shared body heat would be enough to keep them warm.
